Biography: John F. Doherty BA, MSc, MMin Supervision
Reflective Supervisor, Spiritual Director, Educator.
John has been teaching in primary, secondary, third level and facilitating groups for the last twenty years. Coming from a long line of teachers he began his teaching career for five years in primary and secondary school. He then moved on to third level lecturing and has been working within adult education and corporate training for the last fifteen years.
John has a diploma in creative psychotherapy and likes to work with particular focus on the interface between psychology and spirituality. He trained as a Tibetan Buddhist for several years before returning to the Milltown Institute to study Christian spirituality and psychology. He began teaching on the spirituality program at Milltown and currently continues his teaching at All Hallows college, an affiliate of DCU.
John runs courses on helping people to explore their inner world and how it impacts on the outer and visa versa. He runs workshops on Eckhart Tolle’s work the Power of Now and The Art of Stillness, a program he has devised himself. He is the founder and director of the Beehive school that offers on-going training and programs for students to reflect, meditate and deepen their awareness skills and is in the process of publishing his first book in the area of meditation and contemplation.
John also works with teenagers and parents and is a member of a Men’s Spirituality network that seeks to help and support the male spiritual journey. He is in the process of piloting a program he has devised on Male Identity and Leadership Skills for teenage boys and their parents. The aim of which is to enable boys to become more conscious of what it means to have a male identity and live life as a healthy man in today’s society with the skills necessary to succeed.
After doing a masters in supervisory practice John focuses on supporting carers, practioners and teachers in their work with others. Front-line support is an important and often neglected area that is essential to avoid burnout and continue professional development. With this in mind John has recently helped found the Supervisory Association of Ireland with developing links to the rest of Europe in order to support and promote these ideals. He provides group and one to one support for professionals working in caring type professions helping them unpack and reflect on their work. As a supervisor John has been involved in a number of projects, working with the Horizon’s renewal program for the presentation order, supporting staff in the caring professions as well as offering training in group facilitation, and reflection throughout the country.
John likes to play squash and soccer, can often be seen walking in the hills of Wicklow and is an avid rugby supporter.
All the work is accredited and fully insured. Supportive documents and referrals are available on request. John supports his own practice through one to one supervision, a work support group and continual professional development courses and seminars.
